Jacob Wade: Pullman’s own country singer

Early on in my final semester at Washington State University, I found myself attending an open mic at The Land. I went there to support one of my friends who was performing a new song, which turned out really well. A few beers into the night and a few performers had gone and went. Then, one caught my attention. A young man, clad in blue jeans sporting a thick beard got up with his guitar in hand and made his way to the stage. His name was Jacob Wade.

Wade sat down on the chair situated on centerstage and introduced himself. I had no idea what to expect from him. The entire night was jazz and rap music — the norm here for Pullman. He proceeded to throw on his capo and begin strumming the guitar. Instantly, I recognized the first few chords. It was “The Devil wears a Suit and Tie” by Colter Wall. At this point, I was fully engaged.

Wade sang a few songs that night — what they were I can’t fully remember. But I was impressed. I had actually found someone that sang country music in Pullman. Usually, I had to go to Moscow, ID to find anyone remotely country driven, so finding it in my own backyard was great.

I stopped him that night as he was making his way back to his table. We got to chatting, mostly about where he was from and what songs he had picked for his set. He was kind, down to earth, and incredibly friendly. We exchanged numbers after I had told him I worked for the radio station and that he could come in any time for an interview.

This is that interview.
