Wimpy Drake Sues Own Record Label

On Wednesday, Toronto rapper Drake sued his record label, Universal Music Group. According to the New York Times, the lawsuit accuses UMG of prioritizing corporate greed over the well-being of its artists because UMG released and promoted Kendrick Lamar’s Grammy-nominated diss track “Not Like US.” During the rap feud that occurred over the summer, Kendrick and Drake exchanged multiple diss tracks. In Drake’s song “Family Matters,” he accuses Kendrick of beating his wife, and then Kendrick accuses Drake of being a pedophile in his song “Not Like Us.” Drake argues since UMG released “Not Like Us,” it is hypocritical for the label to continue to employ him as it would make them complicit with a pedophile. In my opinion, Drake totally has a case. The accusations leveled in the songs are very serious and may put the artists at risk of retribution. Drake could definitely argue his label had conflicts of interest and violated their contract. However, Drake seems like a total wimp for bringing his case to court. In the past, rappers would either exchange blows through music or bullets. Drake is playing directly into the accusations Kendrick leveled during the feud. He is a rapper from the suburbs who steals from rappers who have real hardship to express. The court is not the place to settle this, and it makes Kendricks’s victory in the feud even clearer.
