The new self titled EP by the Hip-Hop duo “CAPAWAV”, featuring artists Dre Delamar and TyMatts released on November 6, 2024 and has been in constant rotation for me ever since.
The EP starts with an energetic instrumental featuring a catchy flute melody, laying the groundwork for Dre Delamar and TyMatts to spit some incredible bars. The song, titled “RTD”, begins with a catchy hook and a fire verse from TyMatts speaking on the come up and his beginnings. “I got a plan and its looking bright, went to my bedroom bought me a mic, dub in the section, feeling electric” Ty raps before reiterating “If you follow your gut then you doing it right.”
Dre Delamar comes in for the second verse, bringing incredible energy and a dark flow that fits the tone of the instrumental perfectly. He croons “Ran a couple marathons to get it established, before I had to had to close my eyes and just imagine…” The energy on this first track is undeniable, and as they rap about their journey to this point, it sets the stage for the rest of the EP very well.
“Aquatics” is next, and features another catchy hook, this time a little more celebratory. “Sliding in exotics come out dripping like Aquatics… used to want it now I got it!” This track feels like a celebration of the hard work that has gone into the EP, and is one you will catch yourself singing while working around the house, it is just that catchy and good. Dre’s first verse again shows how effortless he can make the wordplay, “At the very least get hoodrich, don’t forget your soul got big bank! Know we see the money got a hold on us still, tryna do my young Gail Goodrich, Ball!” Who else is making that reference?!
The next track in the EP is “55”, perhaps the most introspective and well-written track on the whole project. TyMatts raps “Tell myself don’t quit and just see it through, easier said but its harder to do…” and man does he make it look easy, rapping incredibly before a dreamlike hook takes over. Dre Delamar raps in the second verse “Unbothered in the face of hate, and the eye of storm so serene, crown chakra open as my crush…” The perfect track to listen to while driving down 55.
“So Impressive” comes next and demonstrates the beautiful voice of Dre Delamar. The beat has an undeniable bounce that TyMatts and Dre Delamar use to their advantage, crooning off the instrumental and continuing to deliver memorable lines and deliveries. Like Aquatics, this hook is one you will catch yourself singing constantly. “No second guessing, the way you cross my mind i’m obsessing, the way you put it down So Impressive, always on my mind ooo i’m pressing, hell yeah i’m pressing, no second guessing.” A beat that is made to dance to, and a memorable hook is the foundation to this track, but overall it is all of the components of this song that make it the most stand-out of the entire EP. It is hands down my favorite track on the project.
The final track on the self-titled EP is “Back 2 Back” and evokes memories of the old school Hip-Hop that made me fall in love with the genre. It is tracks like this that made me want to start making music myself. “I don’t follow the crowds because I lead” TyMatts raps before Dre and him start going back and forth for a song that caps off the CAPAWAV EP perfectly. As the song ends, you can catch the origin of the name CAPAWAV: CA (California) to PA (Pennsylvania) WAV. The Wave extends from Cali to Penn, and this project demonstrates it is more of a tsunami than just a swell.
Overall, CAPAWAV demonstrate an impeccable ability to flow on multiple different instrumentals and to create memorable and catchy songs that keep you coming back for more. I highly suggest you give their debut project as a group a listen, it will be well worth your while, and sets the stage for an incredible year of underground music. Check out their new self titled EP “CAPAWAV” wherever you listen to your music!
