The Moss at Wonder Ballroom

This past week I was lucky enough to see one of my most beloved bands, The Moss, play the second-to-last night of their Spring Tour 2025 in Portland– my fifth time seeing them live. Willie (drums) and Tyke (lead vocals) are the last remaining members of the original band that formed in 2015, but newer recruits, Tyler (guitar) and Isaac (bass) did not lack any of the charm that I felt so encapsulated by when I saw The Moss live for the first time in 2023. At that first concert, Tyler and Isaac happened to be opening for the group under their own band, future.exboyfriend–this was the beginning of their collaboration which led to this eventual merge, though F.E.B still makes music separately. Watching them play together on Friday night was a full-circle moment for me.

The setlist included a few unreleased songs that were very funk-pop heavy with a sprinkle of disco. These drops gave a bit of insight as to what their next singles, or possible album, may lean toward genre wise. Each show routinely ends with a perfectly dramatized performance of their high-energy song, “Dog Valley.” The first time I witnessed this is still engrained in my memory; Tyke slowly dismantled the entire stage setup as he sang along to the thick guitar riffs and thunderous drums–though, this year’s execution quickly became my favorite as he stormed the crowd and finished with a flawless backflip.
