STATION REWIND: ALIENS AND MUSIC

Imagine aliens were to land in your backyard… If you had to share one song to help them understand earth, what would it be? That’s the question buzzing around the station. Our team got talking about what the perfect track would be, so let’s dive into the diverse opinions and explore the songs we’d choose to bridge the gap with our new extraterrestrial neighbors.

Meghan – The Last Goodbye by ODESZA

This song is the perfect combination of the old and the new. The samples of Bettye LaVette are kinda nostalgic, like something you’d hear in your grandmas house. ODESZA’s twist on the Last Goodbye has inspired innovation in the EDM community too, with this song being partially credited for a rise in “stutter house”. When I watched ODESZA’s movie on this entire album, this song was very pivotal… Also I think aliens would be like “yo this stuff sounds very futuristic, love it.” Every time I’ve shown this song to people, they always have their head bopping by the end.

Cecilia – Tchaikovsky The Nutcracker Op. 71

Because it’s beautiful so I think it conveys peace but it gets intense in the last third so if they wanted to attack they’d have music for that too.

ZEKE – woodpecker no. 1 by Merzbow

I think it would scare them really bad.

JONBO – Rhapsody In Blue by George Gershwin

64 years of immersion in its greatness

KHALID – Billie Jean by Michael Jackson

true definition of music

Will (Gatman) – Next Level by 6 Dogs (but they have to also watch the music video with me)

As soon as the song begins, it is a perfect encapsulation of the human experience. The birds chirping at the start as the camera focuses, combined with the ethereal synths and money counter sound effect brings everything to a fever pitch before 6 Dogs erupts with some of his best lyrics. “Detail, pay attention to the details… Took a break from balling, now I’m out here early in the morning, crossover then im scoring, to the bank and I’m laughing, try your luck lotto ticket scratchin, if my life were a movie it’d be action, run the set say ‘action’, feel like terminator, I been online, its the right thing, just the wrong time, nah scratch that, its Gucci backpack!” 6’s ability to weave metaphors on and succeeding in his artistry with the dark reality that it can all be taken away in an instant speaks to the fragility of the human experience. The song also echoes the human ability to rely on one another, “Help is on the way!” 6 exclaims before the hook comes back in, almost drowned out by the heavy synths and 808s. The song ends with a haunting back and forth pan of these eerie keys between the listeners ears, an eventual money counter beep and a camera shutter click to indicate that the picture has now been captured. All it took was the focus. For all of these reasons, as soon as the aliens touched down and made contact with me, this would be the first thing I show them. As for the music video, I will let you watch it for yourself, you will be going in blank, like the aliens did. LL6D…… (song not available on Spotify)

Jordan – Concert for aliens by Machine Gun Kelly

First song that instantly came to mind when reading the question

Ella – Break Stuff by Limp Bizkit

If they do not come in peace, I want them to know that I’m in on the destruction, Limp Bizkit is survival.

CEM – Bangarang By Skrillex

I feel that Aliens would really vibe and feel the intensity of a Skrillex song. It may even remind them of their own homes, so I believe welcoming them with a banger of a track would lessen the chance of them invading earth.

Mohammed – HOLD on, IM comin’ by Sam and Dave

If they in trouble, they can lean on me. I thought that song would be so clear to them
