Rest on Easy – Taylor Mccall

Born and raised in the Palmetto state of South Carolina, Taylor McCall is an up-and-coming country music artist with a rugged voice and an old soul. In his teenage years, McCall moved to Montana to pursue an education at Montana State University. Often, he’d find himself out fly fishing on many of Montana’s great rivers, where he would sit and think about the future.

Soon after his time in Montana, McCall would start work on his first album, Summer Heat (2017). McCall had always felt that it was his destiny to create music, ever since his grandfather gifted him a guitar at the age of 7. Fast-forwarding to now, McCall is sitting at a pretty 250,000 monthly listener count on Spotify. His latest EP, Rest on Easy, has been on a virtual nonstop rotation for me.

Rest on Easy may only have two songs on the EP, but the replay value is indescribable. The first song shares the same name as the title, Rest on Easy. The song opens with the sound of a song playing far in the distance, followed by an acoustic guitar riff; something that you might hear in your grandfather’s old records. The authentic guitar strumming is joined by an organ, following along with the chords of the guitar. Within a matter of seconds, McCall’s leathery voice comes in, singing about a tale of time and love. The chorus is particularly beautiful, telling us that a lover could “stay or leave me”, but no matter, McCall will continue to do his best.

The second song on the EP, Mellow War, is perhaps one of my favorite country songs at the moment. According to my last.fm stats, I’ve listened to this song 68 times since it was released on October 27th. The song starts off just like Rest on Easy with a distant noise that you can just barely make out. Once again, the metallic strings of McCall’s guitar begin to vibrate, and you just get the feeling that the song will be melancholy. The rest of the song is just… phenomenal. Maybe it’s too early in the morning for me to formulate the proper sentences to describe it, but damn, this song is just so great. I encourage you to check out this song as well as McCall’s other discography. I can assure you that you’ll be adding him to your country rotation in no time.
