OLIVIA RODRIGO’S NEW SINGLE IS MAKING FANS DROP DEAD

Overview –

Drop Dead is a dreamy, synth-heavy lead single from Olivia Rodrigo’s third studio album titled, “You seem pretty sad for a girl so in love,” which is set to release June 12th.

Olivia is known for her four-letter album titles like SOUR and GUTS, so fans speculated that Olivia would stick with the same pattern. Instead, she went in a different direction, revealing a ten-word album title on an Instagram post that caught people by surprise and got fans talking.

In an interview with Apple Music, Olivia explains knowing she wanted to break molds and expectations of a four-letter album title. She describes being older now and writing the album as a 22-year-old rather than as a teenager in her past work. This feels like a natural progression of maturing and wanting to switch things up both sonically and artistically, which can be seen in both the chosen album cover and first single.

Song Breakdown-

Drop Dead enhances the feelings and experiences of a first date, and the lyrics immerse us fully in the story. While the song could be considered a love song, it has an undertone of anxiety.
Verse two reads,
“And I feel like I might throw up/Left hook, right punch to the gut/ You’re so, so pretty, boy/ I’m paranoid I made you up.”
Olivia never fails to capture multiple feelings in a verse, but her climactic bridges are always the highlight of her songs. In Drop Dead, the bridge is simple in its lyricism but is effective in progressing the story.
The Bridge reads,
“Pisces and a Gemini/But I think we might go really nice together/If you let me stay the night/ Well, I think I might just have to stay forever.”

These lyrics hint towards Olivia’s former relationship with British actor louis partridge. Olivia, born in February and Louis born in June, connects them with the astrological signs she refers to.
Not only is Drop Dead the first single for Olivias new era, but it’s also the first track on the album. Lyrically, Drop Dead isn’t a very complex song; however, like most album openers, it sets the tone for what will be expected for the rest of the album. By starting the album with a song about a first date, it will be interesting to see how the story unfolds.

Release leadup –

Leading up to the announcement of Drop Dead, Olivia cleared her Instagram of old posts to tease a new era and fresh start. On April 6th, Olivia posted clips of four pink padlocks placed in different locations around the world including London, New York, Los Angeles, and Paris. Fans quickly found the locations of the padlocks and put together the words on each locket spelling out “drop dead April 17th.”
Olivia also hinted future Drop Dead Lyrics when she performed The Cures “Just Like Heaven,” during her 2025 Glastonbury Music Festival Set alongside The Cures lead singer Robert Smith. The intro reads,
“You know all the words to “Just Like Heaven”/ And I know why he wrote them now that you’re standin’ right here.”
There’s no better feeling as a fan than connecting easter eggs that artists leave for their fans in both songs and music videos.

Music Video –

Olivia also released a music video for Drop Dead the night it was released, directed by Petra Collins. The music video follows Olivia running around and dancing through The Palace of Versailles in France, that she mentions throughout the song. The historic Palace was once ruled by King Louis XIV, another nod to Olivias rumored ex-boyfriend Louis Partridge.
Each Chorus reads,
“You’re lookin’ like an angel on the wall of Versailles/ The most alive I’ve ever been/ But kiss me and I might drop dead.”

My Final Thoughts –

Overall, I think Olivia made a great choice by making this the lead single. I often prefer when singles aren’t the album opener; however, I think this album will tell a story, and by making this the lead single it keeps fans wanting to know what will happen next. The music video was the highlight of this song for me through the camera movements, lighting, and seeing the architecture of the palace. I also loved Olivia’s outfit and aesthetics. I’ve had Drop Dead on repeat since it was released, and it has quickly become my go to dancing in my dorm song.
