Overcoats – The Fool/Leave If You Wanna/Keep The Faith

Our favorite Brooklyn-based female duo are just as amazing as ever with their three new singles: The Fool, Leave If You Wanna, and Keep The Faith. Just as in their prior music, the easily recognizable dual vocals are strong, raw, and powerful; and not only are the vocals and instrumentals gorgeous, but their new releases come with an inspiring message. In the music video for The Fool, the first of the 3 singles released, Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell recorded themselves shaving their heads together. The duo released a statement to go with the promotional video as follows:

“We wrote it based on ‘The Fool’ tarot card,” says JJ. “It signifies taking a leap of faith and jumping into the unknown. Conceptually, it felt like the beginning of the project. We wiped the slate clean and decided to jump. That’s why the video includes the footage of us shaving our heads. We’re ‘The Fool’, and we’re taking our leap.”

“It’s an empowering message,” continues Hana. “I don’t need to be defined by the opinions of others or go with the status quo; I can fucking be myself.”

The Fool card is numbered zero, known in the Tarot as the number of unlimited potential. It can represent jumping into the unknown, new beginnings, spontaneity, and a free spirit. These concepts not only applied to The Fool, but to the rest of the singles released shortly after. The music for these songs are similar to their past albums, with fiery, energetic beats that make you want to get up and dance. The lyrics, with the new blank slate attitude, have themes of embracing sense of self, and not doing things for others.

The inspiring lyrics, zestful beats, and raw and powerful vocals make Overcoats a duo to be reckoned with. They have a message, they have a story, and they’re not being held back by hair or haters. Listen to these singles, ingest the music, and you may find yourself embracing your sense of self a little more and getting ready to step off the precipice into the unknown.
