ONE YEAR OF THE LIFE OF A SHOWGIRL: REVISTING THE ALBUM AND NEW ENCORE TRACKS

Overview –

Last fall, Taylor Swift released her twelfth studio album titled The Life of a Showgirl on October 3rd, 2025. Taylor wrote and produced this album with collaborators Max Martin and Shellback, whom she worked with on previous albums such as Red, 1989, and Reputation. Together they produced some of Taylors biggest hits: Blank Space, Bad Blood, Ready for it?, and I Knew You Were Trouble.

The promotion and marketing behind The Life of a Showgirl was perfect. The elaborate outfits covered in jewels and feathers made fans curious about what the album will sound like. Along with the complete opposite aesthetic from her previous album, The Tortured Poets Department. This was the first time we would be hearing new music from Taylor after the ending of the historically successful Eras Tour and her growing relationship with Travis Kelce.

Current Album Ranking and Thoughts-
(Favorite to Least Favorite)

While the album wasn’t my favorite on first listen, like any album the more I listened to it the more it grew on me. The Life of a Showgirl isn’t my favorite Taylor Swift album by any means, or even in my top 5, but I think I’ve listened to it every day for the past year since its release.

Conceptually and lyrically, I didn’t fully connect to The Life of a Showgirl, but I don’t think that steers me away from listening to it for its vibes and energy.

The first single for The Life of a Showgirl, The Fate of Ophelia, in my opinion is a perfect pop song and beyond catchy. The Fate of Ophelia music video is my personal favorite music video of hers. I think it perfectly encapsulates her past relationships in comparison to her relationship with Travis Kelce. She includes both new and old references like Ophelia in Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Travis Kelce that creates a perfect blend throughout the song.

  1. The Fate of Ophelia
  1. Honey
  1. Ruin The Friendship

  1. CANCELLED!

The Encore –

When Taylor first announced The Life of a Showgirl, she said that there wouldn’t be a deluxe and only the twelve tracks on the standard album would be released. However, after the release of the album, she went to Sweden to celebrate the success of The Life of a Showgirl with collaborators Max Martin and Shellback which led to the release of additional songs. On September 25th she unveiled four new tracks, which she calls The Encore to The Life of a Showgirl. These Tracks include Patient Zero, Cleveland!, Pink Clouding, and Babylon.

My Encore Ranking –

  1. Pink Clouding
  1. Babylon
  1. Patient Zero
  1. Cleveland!

Patient Zero –

Patient Zero is the newest single from The Life of a Showgirl and had a music video premiere at this year’s VMAs. The music video is directed by Taylor Swift and stars Dakota Johnson, Colin Farrell, and Cara Delevingne. While I like Patient Zero as a song concept, I think the melody for the bridge along with the way the lyrics are spoken sound off to me. However, the chorus is so catchy and fun that it makes up for the bridge for me.

Cleveland! –

The song Cleveland! isn’t my favorite because of its lyrics, production, and tempo. However, I don’t think it’s a bad song because it’s clear that the lyrics are supposed to be sarcastic. Throughout the song, Taylor references hate comments made to her throughout her career. She addresses the things people criticize her for from her appearance to her dancing and personality. Rather than being defensive, Taylor plays along with the judgments and supports the central idea that not everyone needs to like you. Taylor has always had songs that were fun and unserious on every album. The problem is that her haters are equally as obsessed with her as her fans, so every lyric is being pulled apart and scrutinized. Whereas before, it would just be a fun song for the fans. I won’t come back to Cleveland! on a regular basis, but I think it fits on The Life of a Showgirl album.

Pink Clouding –

Pink Clouding is my favorite of The Encore tracks. The lyrics and melody are perfect, and the bridge is my favorite part. I wish she chose this song as the single rather than Patient Zero. On first listen I had no idea what Taylor was talking about or the meaning of the lyrics, but I knew I loved it. This song has themes of regret, emotional unavailability, and the guilt of hurting someone who cared about you. To me, Pink Clouding is about realizing that even if someone genuine enters your life, the timing is not always going to be in your favor. These themes remind me of Taylors song, Midnight Rain off her Midnights album because in both songs Taylor perceives herself as the problem in a relationship even if it would be seen as perfect on paper.

Babylon –

Babylon feels like a classic Taylor Swift song to me. It reminds me of You’re On Your own, kid off of the Midnights album because of its themes involving lesson learning and hindsight contemplation. The song’s message is to stop hurting yourself by clinging onto nostalgia, and to not romanticize the past too much when in the moment you weren’t enjoying it. I think this is something that naturally many of us do and is a concept for a song that I really like from Taylor. She reminds people to live in the moment and appreciate what you have before it’s gone. The lyrics are vulnerable and meaningful, but the song still has an upbeat tempo and catchy chorus.

Final Thoughts –

I think that releasing these songs a few months after she topped charts with I Knew it, I Knew you, was a great decision by her and her team. Fans have been speculating online about when and if Taylor will announce Debut (Taylor’s version) or Reputation (Taylor’s version), since those are the last two she is yet to re-record. The timeline for those drops is still up in the air, but nevertheless I am happy to have four new songs to continue on The Life of a Showgirl era.
